Internet Consultants London

5 years ago, the world was a different place. The general public did not know about blogs, and neither did Google. Google used to treat every site the same, whether you updated it once every 5 years, or once a day.

Google has to always try and enhance the quality of it's search engine results, or it will just lose its dominance, and be replaced by someone else. This is exactly what happened to Yahoo.

And Google has realised that most surfers are looking for freshly updated content. When you search on Google, you do not want information that is 5 years old. Things change so quickly these days. People always want the latest news, fashion, gadgets, and also websites.

You will find that Google will rank you higher if you have a freshly updated blog, other things being equal.

That is why the vast majority of the websites we create include blogs that are updated at least weekly.

Also, we always make sure that we get incoming links from blogs, with our keywords in the anchor text.

If you need help installing a blog, let me know, and I will try and help you.

Does your site have an RSS feed? There is no clear agreement what this actually stands for, although usually people say it stands for "Really simple syndication", although sometimes people say it stands for "Rich site summary".

Whatever it does stand for, doesn't really matter. The point is, it is another essential weapon in our battle for Google domination.

If you are using internet explorer or firefox, and browse to www.hertfordaccountant.co.uk you might notice that there is an orange square icon with some white curvy lines in it. In Internet explorer this is with the home and print icons, and in firefox it is to the right of the address bar. This indicates that there is an RSS feed on the site. And then if you go to www.google.co.uk the icon is either missing or grayed out.  This indicates that there is no feed.

Many frequently updated sites, including blogs, have an RSS feed, and then this can be aggregated by feed aggregators, and syndicated to many websites around the world.

You could, if you were so minded, include a feed on your site from another site, such as Reuters, or the BBC. The purpose of the orange logo is to facilitate you subscribing to such a syndication.

However, this is not why I am talking about RSS feeds in this email.

If your site has an RSS feed, this will be sent all over the internet, including Google. And everytime you update your site, the RSS feed will be sent out, and you will be pinged back from servers all over the world.

If you do not have an RSS feed, then Google will not know that you have updated your site.

That is another advantage of having a blog. These automatically include RSS feeds.

It goes without saying that the vast majority of websites that we make are blogs, and therefore have RSS feeds.
